Opel unveils its Vivaro e-Concept plug-in electric van at the 2010 IAA Commercial Vehicles Fair in Hannover, Germany. This concept was built to demonstrate the benefits of electrification to commercial vehicle operators.

The Vivaro’s 111 kw (149 hp) electric engine delivers 370 Nm of torque and a pure electric range of 100 km (62 miles). An unspecified range extender gives the van an additional 300 km (186 mile) range.

By storing the batteries under the floor, Opel can offer 5 cubic metres (177 cubic feet) of storage space and the ability to haul 750 kg (1650 lbs) of payload. As with most plug-in vehicles, the batteries can be charged through a standard 230 volt socket.

Chris Lacey, Executive Director of International Operations at Opel / Vauxhall Commercial Vehicles says:

“Electric mobility will allow to travel in city areas which are now off-limits to petrol and diesel-powered vehicles and the range-extender technology makes it possible to use an electric van for normal routine business.”

Opel is planning to launch a series of electric-powered cars under Chevrolet Volt program. The recently announced $1 billion investment will include the development of various electric-powered vehicles based on the E-Flex architecture.

First up will be the production version of last year’s Flextreme Concept that is expected to arrive in the European market one year after the Chevy Volt, in 2011.

The Flextreme combines an electric propulsion motor and a 1.3-liter CDTI diesel. The diesel engine is onboard solely to power the generator and charge the battery.

The Flextreme can be charged in around three hours via a standard 220 V electrical socket. A fully charged lithium-ion battery gives the concept car a range of around 55 km or 35 miles in purely electric operating mode. When the battery is run down and no electrical socket available, the Flextreme’s common-rail diesel engine kicks in to provide electricity and recharge it.
